CHAPTER NINE

“I’m surprised Rosie was agreeable to you bringing her back here after hearing you admit to taking out Bortkov,” Sinclair observed.

Max had just informed his eldest brother, Casper, and Adam, of the conversation that had taken place between him and Rosie.

“I doubt there’s anywhere else for her to go where she’s going to feel safe.” Max paced restlessly up and down the family sitting room. “Her apartment isn’t secure enough, and her father has already brushed off Rosie’s concerns for Cara, so he isn’t likely to want to get involved now either. Fucking cowardly piece of shit,” he added vehemently.

Rosie hadn’t spoken to Max again as they continued the drive to her apartment. Or when he waited near the door while she packed a few of her belongings into a bag. Or on the drive back to Kingston Manor.

Casper and Sinclair had met them at the door. Sinclair had taken one look at the sickly pallor of Rosie’s face and quietly offered, if she wished, to take her upstairs to the bedroom that had been prepared for her.

Rosie had most definitely wished.

Before she went, she’d taken her cell phone from her pocket and handed it to Casper, with the words “in case Cara calls and you’re able to trace where it’s coming from.”

She hadn’t even looked at Max again as Sinclair picked up her bag and she followed him up the stairs. Nor, apart from a softly spoken thank-you once she’d entered the guest bedroom, had she apparently spoken to Sinclair either.

“Look, I’m really sorry Rosie overhead our conversation, but there’s nothing I can do or say that will unsay it.” Casper grimaced. “You told me she’d fainted,” he reminded Max. “How the hell was I supposed to know she’d woken up again and would hear you admit to killing Kirill Bortkov? Maybe if you or Adam”—he included both men in his reproachful gaze—“had bothered to share your interest in the now all-grown-up Smythe sisters with me, I might have been able to look into Langley’s background before he was able to take Cara.”

“None of this is your fault, Casp,” Max assured heavily. “You’re right, Adam and I should have told you when we’d seen Rosie and Cara again, and realized we were attracted to them. I’m also the one who should have checked to see if Rosie was unconscious before I admitted to killing Kirill Bortkov.”

God knows what Rosie thought of him now. Probably that he was no better than the Russian thug he had eliminated.

Or his son, Caesar?

Apart from his identity, Caesar Bortkov was still an unknown quantity. Casper hadn’t been able to access any more information about him except that he was Bortkov’s illegitimate son and had arrived in England nine years ago. He had then disappeared into the ether for eight years, before emerging again as James Langley, the bona fide owner of a London art gallery.

“Yeah, this is all kinds of fucked up,” Adam rasped when Max gave him a concerned glance. “But we’ll
